Artist Statement

As a painter with degrees in both Art and Film & Media studies, my paintings are inspired by film stills and the aesthetic of montage. I find there is something magical and poetic when one pauses a film and creates an image of a subtle and fleeting moment, where the figures are frozen in the middle of their motion, a kind of state that is unbalanced, transitional, and seemingly absent-minded. It is not like photography that aims to capture moving subjects such as sport photography because the pause is not an intentional capture of exciting moments, but a glitch of what is supposed to create an illusion of another world where time and space flow indifferently like in ours. And this feeling of “glitch” is something I find inspiring in my art practice, which discusses themes like intimacy, memories, subconsciousness, and existential crisis.
